  1. Entry added to Mosher Press Exhibitions: Two exhibitions in the first half of 2016 presented books from the Mosher Press, one as part of the Penn Libraries exhibition of color in private and fine press books in their “Across the Spectrum” exhibit from February to May, and the other being the “New Members Collect” Exhibition at the Grolier Club, June through July. Both are covered here.

Bishop: (Bishop, Philip R., subject) Barry, Rebecca Rego. “Leather-Bound Beauty in a Cowboy Outpost” in Rare Books Uncovered—True Stories of Fantastic Finds in Unlikely Places. Foreword by Nicholas A. Basbanes. Minneapolis, MN: Voyageur Press, [December] 2015, pp. 44-48. This exciting books-on-books volume is filled with 52 tales of remarkable discoveries from the world of book collecting including those by book dealers, collectors, institutional professionals, and family members who had no idea what lurked in their attic. Bishop’s story, as recounted by Rebecca Barry, is but one of those entertaining and inspiring chapters.
  3. New website launched with an updated design, content reorganization, and many new images added throughout.

Included are four new essays for the fall issue of Endpapers, including an essay on a Mosher inscription to famed book collector William F. Gable; a training binding by the Long Island suffragist Rosalie Gardner Jones; the acquisition of numerous very limited Japan vellum Mosher books; a 1917 binding signed M-E-T on Francis Thompson’s Shelley: An Essay (Mosher, 1912); a newly acquired Japan vellum copy of Fragilia Labilia in binding once owned by the American minister to China—J. V. A. MacMurray; a copy of Mosher’s 1926 catalogue inscribed by John L. Foley to Dean Archibald Lewis Boulton of Columbia University; a strange copy of The Lotus with Mosher’s ad; acquisition of the Henry William Poor copy of Swinburne’s Poems & Ballads (Mosher, 1904) with a letter from Mosher to H. W. Poor; and signed and inscribed copies of Robert Bruce Stewart’s Fair Play’s a Jewel (2015) which uses Mosher as a pivotal character. The essays also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the plaque honoring Mosher at 45 Exchange St. in Portland, Maine, and give a tribute to Gordon Peiffer as past editor of Endpapers. An account of the acquisition of a Mosher book from Charles Frederick Eaton’s ‘The Arts & Crafts’ Shop in Santa Barbara, California (calligraphy by Robert Wilson Hyde) is included. Finally thirteen more books with Mosher’s bookplate are recorded as being added to the Bishop Collection.

Essay from the Delaware Bibliophiles’ March 2009 newsletter and a number of books from Mosher’s library including the Vale Press Life of Benvenuto Cellini (1900) which Mosher pointedly criticized, Machen’s The Great God Pan (1895) from which Mosher published an extract, and a book from his father, Capt. Benjamin Mosher. Also mounted were several pieces of correspondence to / from / or about Mosher, and links to Bishop’s articles on the Gordon-Van Tine bungalow.

Added three essays: one from the Delaware Bibliophiles newsletter and two related to the Gordon-Van Tine home of the Bishops. Also added the Independent Online Booksellers Association newsletter, The IOBA Standard. The Fall 2008 edition (posted in December 2008) was completely dedicated to the Bishop Collection of Mosher Books including both a picturesque essay on bindings and an extensive interview with Phil Bishop by Shawn Purcell. A book was added to the books from Mosher’s library, and other general maintenance performed including slight changes to some pages.

Added four new essays published in the September 2008 issue of Endpapers. Also added new books from Mosher’s library.

March 1 & May 21, 2008

Added Sunday News article on Bishop and story behind a Mosher book appearing in a foreign film, and added the new essay “The Lost Galleon Found” from the March issue of the Delaware Bibliophiles’ Endpapers (see credits page). Added several new bindings to the page on Fine Bindings. Added several letters to the Mosher manuscripts in The Bishop Collection; also added several books from Mosher’s library. Added the Delaware Art Museum to the Exhibitions page, and added other exhibition updates relating to the Eragny Press exhibition. Under Exhibitions added two talks on Mosher, one to the Manchester Bibliographical Society in Manchester on March 17 and one to The Baxter Society in Portland, Maine on May 14, 2008. Added more books from Mosher’s library to the Bishop Collection.

Under the Bishop collection: added numerous books to Mosher’s Library, added correspondence from Mosher including an archive of material to bookseller/publisher Charles S. Pratt, added an original source text for the Vest Pocket Aucassin and Nicolete, added another book printed on vellum from the Williard library, and added an archive of material relating to the 1906 publishing of Circum Praecordia, added material surrounding the publishing of Corra Fabbri’s poetry. Also two extra-illuminated books were added, and several bindings including one executed by Charlotte Strouse, wife of the noted Mosher collector Norman Strouse.

Added letters from Ellen Terry under manuscripts (with corresponding JPEG photos) in the Bishop Collection as well as a number of new books added from Mosher’s library; improved the cross-link functionality of several pages. Added four new essays written by Bishop appearing in the Delaware Bibliophiles’ newsletter, ENDPAPERS, including “The French Connection:–Thoughts from a Pandit in Switzerland,” and “Lights, Action, Camera” which chronicles a Mosher book appearing in an upcoming film entitles “The Secret Life of Words” starring Tim Robbins and Julie Christy, et.al. Added 2004 Club Bindery exhibition with links to the Mosher Press Exhibitions page. Changed Bishop’s e-mail link to his new address at mosher@ptd.net.

Four additional essays have been added to Bishop’s published writings (see Opening Credits page). In addition to a number of small changes, transcriptions to the “Piracy Controversy” links were corrected. Several more books were added to the Books from Mosher’s Library in the Bishop Collection. A new acquisition was added to the books printed on real vellum (Primavera). Several new bindings on Mosher books (with links to pictures) have also been added to the Mosher Books in Fine Bindings in the Bishop Collection including a Rubáiyát and an exhibition binding by René Chambolle on a copy of Aucassin & Nicolete.

A Google search feature is now part of the Table of Contents page. This feature self-indexes periodically so recent additions, like those listed immediately below for 7 Dec. 2004, will eventually be made part of the index Google searches. Added The Collected Works of William Morris, Lang’s Grass of Parnassus, two issues of The Quest, and the 1870 issue of Rossetti’s Poems (which is also the source text for Mosher’s publication of 1902) to the books from Mosher’s library in the Bishop Collection. Added two illuminated Mosher books, Félise and The Roadmender, and three Launder bindings and their pictures linked to the bindings page (also a sample Club binding on Swinburne is now linked to a picture), and lastly a Dec. 1921 letter from Mosher was added with link to the actual letter.

Added four essays from the Delaware Bibliophiles Endpapers under Credits / Philip R. Bishop: “Unexpected Kindnesses” dealing with the many instances where people have contributed gifts to the Mosher Press collection of R. R. Bishop; an intriguing article based on “The Mosher Bookplate” and what it does and does not represent; an essay entitled “A Little Celebration” which discusses Bishop’s completion of the most difficult series in the Mosher canon; and an essay on “More Kindnesses Remembered” which brings the gifts to the Mosher collection up-to-date. A new book was also added to the books from Mosher’s library, and general maintenance to make the website accessible to Internet search engines.

Added eight books to “Books from Mosher’s Library” (several inscribed or with letters) and added two Mosher books to “Books Printed on Roman Vellum” all in the Bishop collection. Also added letter from Charles C. Bubb of the Clerk’s Press and an important letter from Mosher to George Charles Williamson to the “Manuscript Material” and a rare boxed set of Stevenson’s books from the Vest Pocket Series, now all in the Bishop collection.
